April 2016 Impact

What we did for Students in April 2016

  • Annual Sports Dinner

The SU Bar was transformed into a glitzy, dinner dance setting to host the Annual Sports Dinner.   The sports teams came together in style to celebrate their successes and give a big thank you to those students who have put time and effort into running and playing for a club.

Guests were greeted with a Bucks Fizz reception, and later in the evening the Awards Ceremony took place.  The ‘Team Of The Year’ went to the Women’s Football team, the ‘Most Improved Team of the Year’ was awarded to the Netball Team and the Men’s Football 1st Team were awarded the Wooden Spoon.

Individual club awards were also given out, and the evening finished with a buffet meal and dancing.

  • Winners of the SU Dubai Trip Challenge

The winning team for the 2015/2016 Dubai Trip Challenge (Gianluca Cocco, Philippa Louise, Joanne Jones Heaton, Adam Haslam, Stacey Johnson and Megan Morris) left a dull and overcast Manchester Airport on 10th April 2016 to travel to the sunny climate of Dubai.  The team helped out at GETEX (The Gulf Education and Training Exhibition), visited the Academic Centre in Ras Al Khaimah and had a desert experience trip amongst other things.  Stacey told us the team enjoyed visiting Dubai and that it was a unique experience and very, very hot.   You can see some photos on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

  • Annual Volunteering Awards Ceremony (Thursday 14th April)

Hosted by the University in the SU Bar, Volunteering Awards were presented by the SU to Sports Clubs, Fresher’s Legends and active Societies to acknowledge the contribution that student volunteers make to the success of the Students’ Union.

Dr Emily McIntosh – Director of Student Experience – said “it’s great to see so many students giving up their free time to help others.”

  • NUS Conference

Arthur and Maddison (NUS Conference Delegate) travelled to Brighton on Tuesday 19th April for 3 days to NUS Conference 2016 to represent University of Bolton students on a national level.   NUS National Conference is the head policy making body of NUS UK.  Bolton Students’ Union vote went to Malia Bouattia who was subsequently elected as the first black Muslim woman NUS President.

  • Student Led Teaching Awards

The winners of the annual SLTA were announced at an Awards Ceremony which took place on Friday 22nd April hosted by the Students’ Union in the SU Bar.  These awards are a way of giving those lecturers, teaching support staff, non-teaching staff, course reps and academic societies the recognition they deserve.

The SLTA are entirely led by students, and rely on the feedback and testimonials of students here at the University of Bolton.

With over 650 nominations, the SLTAs, now in their fourth year, are a recognised part of the university calendar.

Over 70 people gathered to celebrate the achievements of the year, with speeches given by representatives from students and the Students’ Union.

All nominated staff and students received a framed certificate, printed with quotes from their nominators and, in addition, the winners received an engraved glass paper weight.

Speaking during the ceremony, the SU President, Arthur, congratulated the all nominees and thanked the students who nominated them and said “the SLTA demonstrate how important the partnership between the SU and the University is and how important it is to recognise the contribution of individual staff members to the student experience.”

  • Bolton Hospice Bake-thon

The Students’ Union held its annual Bolton Hospice Bake-a-thon at the end of April.  We raised £162.70 for Bolton Hospice.  Thank you to all those who baked cakes and thank you to all those who bought a cake.  The winner of the Show Stopper Cake (kindly donated by Michelle Varey) was Michael Cowill.
