November 2016 Impact

  • We held our annual Personal Safety event in the Chancellor’s Mall.  Exhibitors gave out tips, advice and freebies to students on keeping safe in the home and when out and about during the day and evening.  The fire service highlighted the dangers of carbon monoxide and the requirement of landlords having up to date Gas Safety Certificates, the Police were on hand advising students on the best ways to keep safe and a number of exhibitors including BIDAS, Bolton’s drug and alcohol awareness service, gave out vital information about drugs and alcohol.

  • We once again raised money for Children in Need.  We did a quizzical treasure hunt around the University, and each member of the winning team won a cinema ticket and a £5 voucher to be spent in the SU shop or SU Bar.  Students also had to guess how many sweets were in the jar.  Everyone had a fun time and together we raised £45.

  • The Activities Showcase also took place in November where Sports Clubs and Societies came together in the mall to promote to students what they do, tell everyone how fantastic they are and to recruit new members.   Joining a Sports Club or society is the best way to get involved in student life at university, meet new people and, of course, have a great time!   We also did the Mannequin Challenge visit our facebook page to see how we did https://www.facebook.com/BoltonStudentsUnion/

  • We continue with our Chill Out Tuesday’s and visited Orlando to help students chill and enjoy some downtime between assignments.  CECs played board games, cards and chatted with students.

  • The SU President (Vivienne Newton) was invited to be a member of the QAA Student Advisory Board.  This board advises the QAA Board on issues relevant to the work of the QAA affecting current or prospective students.  Being involved in this process means that Bolton students are represented in the decision making process,  and should ensure that future QAA work will take into account the views of students who choose universities like Bolton.  As Student President, this also gives Vivienne the opportunity to ensure that changes being implemented at the University of Bolton in response to national HE policy keep students at the heart of the process, including supporting student representatives with additional training and discussion forums.

  • Vivienne has also been invited to join The Student Engagement Partnership (TSEP) steering group.  TSEP is a central hub for student engagement expertise operating in partnership with major sector organisations including Hefce, AoC, QAA, GuildHE and NUS.  Similar to the QAA SAB, Vivienne’s involvement will ensure that those involved in making decisions affecting the future of Higher Education in England will take into consideration the impact these decisions have on the type of students here at Bolton.  This contributes to ensuring that there are opportunities for everyone to gain a HE qualification, regardless of background.  The benefit to Bolton students is that Vivienne can share the latest thinking in student engagement with the University and use this knowledge to ensure that the services offered here really contribute to improving the student experience and help students to love student life.

  • Third year students from Film Production told us there was no moodle handbook available for the Compositing and Post Techniques module.  They have requested the handbook on a number of occasion and nothing was done.  The President, Vivienne, spoke to the head of school and it was uploaded the same day.
