We always hold a Refreshers fair in February so new starters from January and February can grab some freebies and find out what the SU, Uni and local organisations have to offer.
We also hold a second Activities Awareness day, an opportunity for students to chat with Society Officers, ask questions and sign up. As always, the Medieval Society put on combat displays throughout the day, wearing their medieval costumes and using historically correct replica fighting equipment. They always put on a good show for us.
We held a Personal Safety event, using our spin the wheel game to start conversations around what is and what is not consent, the Community Police Officers attended and chatted to students about Hate Crime prevention and reporting.
We held our Thoughtful Thursdays throughout February, asking questions of students to gauge how they’re feeling and putting in place activities to help.
Unfortunately, our usual Cupid was unavailable on Valentine's Day, so another staff member stood in and gave out paper flowers made by SU Staff and heart shaped lollies to students. It certainly brightened up their day and make them smile on a chilly February morning!
SU staff have been busy behind the scenes getting paperwork in place for our name change; from Bolton SU to the University of Greater Manchester Students’ Union. We took the opportunity to have a complete rebrand and held a competition for students to design a new logo with new colours. The new logo and colours will be shown to students for the first time at the Annual General Meeting in March. Exciting times!
Nominations opened on 24th February for the next Students’ Union President and, of course, the next President will be the first President of the University of Greater Manchester Students’ Union. We already have nominations!
We held another Speak Week, asking students about facilities at the University, anything from classroom temperatures to lifts and accessibility. A report will be formulated with recommendations and sent to the University for their consideration and action.
Jasneet, the SU President, with the help of her team of student volunteers and SU staff, put on a Women in Leadership Conference. We worked hard to transform the SLZ into a professional conference setting. Once students had registered, they were welcomed with a soft drink and shown to their seats. We had speakers from law, health, local government and the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. It was an inspiring and uplifting conference. We are sure our female students were encouraged to go on and be the next leaders in their chosen field.
We marked LGBT History month by creating a board with information about influential LGBT historical figures on it. We also made some cotton bracelets to give out.
