The role of President is a paid, full-time position and can only be taken after a student has graduated or by taking a year out.
You will help students to make the most of their time at University.
You will work together with SU staff and volunteers to:
• Promote and defend the rights of University of Greater Manchester students.
• Campaign on issues affecting University of Greater Manchester students.
• Act as a Trustee of the Students’ Union.
• Represent the voice of students.
• Be a Governor of the University of Greater Manchester
• Lead the Union in delivering on Students’ representative and political priorities.
You will gain lots of new transferrable skills and learn a lot about how the SU works - all fantastic additions to your CV.
The role of President is a big one, but there's lots of support
to make sure your year in office is successful. The entire SU team is here to help
you to achieve your goals, as well as members of staff in the National Union of Students,
and University of Greater Manchester staff members too. You’ll get plenty of training in the role.
Don’t think that you’ll be doing this alone!
The President position is a full time position. You’ll be expected to work
around 37.5 hours a week. Of course you get holidays - up to 25 days a year.
All current students at the University of Greater Manchester can vote in the SU election.
University staff can’t vote in the election (unless they’re also a student here!)
The same students who can vote (see above), so it’s anyone who is a current student at the University of Greater Manchester.
Please note, you must have been a student here for a least 3 months at the close of nominations
before you can nominate yourself to run in the Election.
Yes, you can run in the election. You just have to be a student when you
run - it doesn’t matter if you graduate before you take up the role in July 2025.
Yes, you can do, absolutely! We’ll ask you to suspend your studies for
a year so you can fulfil the role. It is a full time and paid position, after all!
We will address this when you are elected, but basically there is no reason why
your VISA wouldn’t be extended to cover for the additional year in the UK.
We have had many international students as SU Presidents in the past and there has been no
problems securing extensions. Obviously this would need to be
confirmed by UK Visas and Immigration.
