Take a look at our new prezi:http://prezi.com/a_4s7nlnt-ne/academic-group-reps/
Who are they?
There are 9 Academic Group Reps, these reps are involved in communicating the opinions and ideas of the whole academic group which could include representing students’ views from a variety of courses under one academic school.
There are 6 Academic Groups; Business, Accounting and Law(BAL); Creative Technologies(CT); Health and Community Studies(HCS); Education and Psychology(EP); Engineering, Science and Sport(ESS); Art, Design and Languages(ADL).
The larger Academic Groups have two reps; BAL, EP and ESS. The other three groups have one rep, if you would like to know who your Academic Group Rep is then please contact the Students’ Union and we can provide contact details for you.
What do they do?
The role of an Academic Group Rep doesn’t differ too far from that of a Course Rep but they are responsible for representing a much larger student voice, that of their academic group. They do this by attending different meetings across the university and Students’ Union.
They attend Achievement Review Boards (ARBs) throughout the year; these are similar to Staff-Student Liaison Committee meetings. Academic Group Reps are responsible for collecting students’ and Course Reps’ views before these meetings and acting upon the feedback presented. They are expected to support the Course Reps and take any concerns that they feel have not been dealt with to a more advanced level, as well as highlighting good practice to the senior staff at these meetings.
After meetings, the Academic Group Reps then feedback information to the student body via the course reps and other methods of communication.
Other Responsibilities
Like course reps, throughout the year Academic Group Reps are required to help to promote a number of activities taking place on campus such as the Students’ Union Elections, The NSS (National Student Survey) and the Student Led Teaching Awards.
Academic Group Reps also gain a place on the Student Union Council. They will attend these meetings twice or three times a year alongside the elected full and part-time Student Officers. Here they discuss all types of issues (academic and non-academic) that they feel are important to the improvement of student experience and welfare at the University of Bolton.
The feedback from Academic Group Reps is vital in the open and honest communication that all our students expect of us. They will be dealing with academic group level issues and will be key players in representing students’ voices at different levels within the university.
How can I get involved?
Academic Group Reps are appointed at the start of the academic year, they typically have to submit an application as well as attend an interview if successfully shortlisted.
Please support you Academic Group Reps by providing them with feedback to take to meetings and help with to relaying back to the student body.
If you would like any more information about becoming an Academic Group rep then please contact the Student Rep Coordinator (details can be found under the ‘representation’ page).
