ELECTIONS - WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

Bolton Students' Union (BSU) is the representative body for students at Bolton.  BSU exists to represent you, provide services for you (social, commercial and welfare) without discrimination on grounds of sex, race, sexuality, age, religion or creed.

When you enroll as a student at the University of Bolton you automatically become a member of the Students' Union. This entitles you to use any of our services and facilities that we offer. The Union exists for your benefit and we work purely in the interest of all students. Don't worry if you don't want to be a member, you have the right to opt-out, and you can still use our services and facilities.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

BSU is a Students’ Union run for students led by students, so every year students elect the students who will run BSU.

There is one full-time position; the President (Sabbatical Officer).  The President is also a trustees of the Union, and has representative responsibilities, and will help run the Union on a day-to-day basis. The President’s position is a paid position and will require you to take a year out of study or take office as soon as you graduate.  Your period of work runs from July of the year you were elected, until the following July.

There are also 4 Part-time Non-Sabbatical positions available;

  • Sports Clubs and Societies Officer
  • Welfare and Campaigns Officer
  • Publicity and Marketing Officer
  • Communities and Environment Officer

In addition there is one NUS Delegate to Conference position available.  (The President and the President Elect will attend conference automatically).  Delegates play a vital role in shaping the future and the policy of NUS at a crucial and important time for students.   This is a unique opportunity to find out more about NUS and also meet up with students from across the country.  You will be  representing University of Bolton students at the NUS National Conference in Liverpool.

WHY ARE THESE ELECTIONS SO IMPORTANT?

1. The University of Bolton recognises BSU officers as the official voice of the students.

2. The more students that vote in the elections, the stronger our voice within the university. High voter turnout = big mandate = strong voice for students.

3. These elections will determine who represents you to the University next year.

4. The officers feed into the policy, practice, performance and perception of this University.

5. Will it really make a difference? YES, and if you don’t vote, it is guaranteed that you will not make a difference.

Details of the next election will be posted when they become available.

Taking part in BSU democracy is very important, either by standing for a position or by voting for a candidate.  Please make your voice heard, so nominate, stand and vote…...your voice, your choice, your Union!
