Annual General Meeting

What is an AGM?

The Annual General Meeting is your opportunity to find out about and take part in the democratic running of your Students' Union.  One item on the agenda at this year's AGM is for the student body to approve the new SU Articles of Association.  The Articles of Association are available to view by clicking on this link

It’s your opportunity to discuss your views with other members, vote on the Motions proposed and quiz the President who you have elected to run your Union.   The AGM is to be held on Thursday 3rd April 2014 at 12noon in the Social Learning Zone (SLZ).

What is a Motion?

All members of the Students' Union are entitled to attend, vote and submit a Motion that outlines what their issue is and what recommended action they believe should be taken.  If you feel strongly about a matter relating to your student wide experience, then submit a motion and have the question debated and subsequently voted on by the whole of the student body.

How do I write a Motion?

This Union notes… (FACTS)

This must be factual information that can be independently seen to be true.

 This Union believes… (OPINIONS)

This contains things that you consider to be true, but which other people may disagree with.  You should be open-minded and accept that others may not agree with what you believe, even if you consider it to be 'fact'.

 This Union resolves… (ACTIONS)

This section tells BSU what action to take as an organisation.

How do I submit a Motion?

Your Motion Form must be signed by you (the Proposer) and a Seconder (who gives their support and agreement) to the motion.  The proposer must attend the AGM to propose the motion in order for it to be valid.

Motion Deadline

Your Motion needs to be submitted to the President by the deadline, Thursday 27th March 2014 at 5pm.

Please Note: Emergency Motions may be submitted at any time before the AGM if they deal with matters which have arisen after the deadline for submission of motions has passed.

How are Motions discussed?

The proposer of each Motion will be given 3 minutes to persuade the attending members to support it.  The motion is then open to discussion.  If opposed, the opposition will also be given 3 minutes to debate the motion.  After a few rounds, a final decision will be made by the attendees voting for or against the Motion.
